You Need Me, As Much As I Need You

I started talking to my cinema professor about the relationship between the intent of the autor of Starship Troopers and Paul Vorhoevens film. Then in some tangent we were discussing the roles in which art plays in culture and how post-modernist artists and film makers are constantly breeding off the interplay between the past the present and the uncertain future. Culture has been shifting arts importance and art has been shaping American culture for over 60 years. This had me thinking about what designs role within culture plays.

There are many facets to this question, besides the fact of design having the social power to influence and alter behavior, going past visceral reactions of design we can look at how design is important in sustaining and perpetuating the economy in America. There is a give and take relationship between designers and corporations and the government. Like the owner of IBM once said about his fortunate companies designer, Paul Rand, ‘good design is good business’ and good business means a thriving economy meaning more opportunity for designers. Together we help each other realize the depth of endless experimentation and success within our fields.
